Highly Recommended An exceptional, frequently surprising film, Westward the Women (1952) is an underrated William A. Wellman-directed Western adapted from a story by Frank Capra. Its qualities seem much more Wellman's doing than Capra's, who had wanted to direct it himself with Gary Cooper in the lead, but in any case the picture deserves to be better known. Robert Taylor stars as a wagon master leading 140 women across the 2,000-mile trail from Chicago to California.
